How ‘Lawman’ Became ‘Justified’

After six mostly-wondrous seasons, tonight it’s finally time for Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens to hang up his badge for good. It’s the series finale of the FX drama we all know and love, Lawman.

At least, that’s what we might all be saying today if Steven Seagal, of all people, hadn’t forced FX to execute an 11th hour title change for its new drama, based on an Elmore Leonard character, and come up with what turned out to be the perfect name for the series: Justified.

FX has announced the project as Lawman back in 2009, but the network renamed it in early 2010 to avoid a conflict with Steven Seagal: Lawman, a now-long-forgotten A&E reality series about Seagal’s work as a reserve deputy sheriff in Louisiana. The new title, Justified, was taken from a line in the pilot, in which Raylan’s new boss, Art Mullen, asks him about his quick-draw shooting of a mob hitman in Miami, which causes Raylan to be reassignment to Kentucky’s Harlan County. “It was justified,” says Raylan.

When I interviewed Justified creator Graham Yost earlier this year for my Daily Beast story about series finales (a story that is worth rereading before tonight’s Justified farewell), we also talked about the title that wasn’t, and how the show’s fate might have changed had it kept its original moniker.

Once FX decided on a name change, “we didn’t come up with Justified,” says Yost. “That was an FX idea and we went, ‘Okay, they like it; that’s fine.’ We couldn’t come up with anything better. The people who worked on The Shield hated that title at first. It was supposed to be called Rampart, and the LAPD basically said, ‘You will not get any help from us if that’s what you call it.’ So they came up with The Shield, and no one liked it. It became The Shield and Justified became Justified.”

Now, of course, there’s no question that Justified is far superior to the generic-sounding Lawman, which seems more appropriate for a CBS procedural. “There’s a slight question in the title, a little bit of irony, it’s the whole thing of Raylan’s story in that and so it’s great,” says Yost. “And Lawman is far more straightforward. There would have been great posters, and it might have gotten a bigger audience in some ways, or at least sampling it, but I don’t think it would’ve had the core people who really got into it.”

Then again, as Yost points out, the title might not have mattered much in the end, so long as the show itself was as compelling as Justified turned out to be: “It’s absolutely ridiculous to try and equate, but The Beatles is the most ridiculous name for a band,” he notes. “It was modeled on The Crickets, but all these associations go away.”

Farewell, Justified and/or Lawman. And — here’s a sentence no one has likely ever uttered before — thank you, Steven Seagal!

FX Wants to be the ‘Best’ Channel on TV, Not the Highest-Rated One

Lots of crazy things have been said over the years at TCA press tour — like when Kevin Reilly declared the death of pilot season last January — but on my last day at winter tour, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said something I’d never heard uttered there before: he’d rather be the “best” channel instead of the top-rated one. As I wrote at Adweek,

“Obviously we want as many people as possible to watch our shows, we want them to be as highly rated as possible, but there’s quite a range [of ratings], and we can support that range,” said Landgraf, referring to some of FX’s critically acclaimed, but lower-rated, shows like Louie and The Americans. “We’re not really a channel that’s trying to be the highest-rated channel in television. We’re trying as hard as we possibly can to be the best channel in television, whatever that means. If we weren’t therefore supporting shows that would help us get there, just because [they weren’t among the highest-rated], we’d be idiots.”

While Landgraf is sticking by critically-acclaimed yet low-rated shows like Louie and The Americans, his patience does have its limits, as he explained to me last fall after he canceled The Bridge. He talked about the two-horse race to be the “best” network on TV (look out, HBO!), the glut of programming on television (more than 1,700 original seasons of TV last year!) and the need to break out of a format “dictated by the terms of business.”

Which Networks Made the Naughty and Nice Lists This Year?

I’ve wrapped my Best (& Worst) in 2014 week, but I have one final look back for this year: my Adweek story about which networks made Santa’s naughty and nice lists in 2014. The easiest call by far? NBC, which topped the nice list:

It was a very good year for the Peacock Network, which won the 2013-14 season in 18-49 (a 2.7 average), its first demo victory in 10 years. The network picked up where it left off this fall, where it’s once again leading the pack in 18-49 (thanks largely to Sunday Night Football and The Voice). Not even Peter Pan Live’s disappointing ratings can stall NBC’s momentum, especially with Super Bowl XLIX waiting in the wings on Feb. 1.

This week, I’ve revealed the 10 best shows of the year, along with the top 10 performances, and I’m still not done handing out accolades for TV in 2014. Today, I’m naming my TV VIPs of 2014, where I’m recognizing the shows, actors and networks that helped give TV one of its greatest years ever.

Comeback of the Year: Homeland

Just when I thought I was out, Claire Danes and showrunner Alex Gansa pulled me back in! After two frustrating seasons in which the show often seemed even more off the rails than Carrie Mathison without her meds, the drama returned to form in its second half by out 24-ing 24 itself (which Homeland‘s creators made their bones on). And most of the show’s missteps — hundreds of them! — will be forgiven if Sunday’s finale is anywhere as engaging as the last several episodes have been.

Gone Too Soon: Trophy Wife, Enlisted, The Bridge 

While some low-rated wonders like You’re the Worst and Hannibal eked out renewals, this trio of terrific shows proved to be better than audiences deserved. Viewers who have been decrying the death of the TV comedy obviously weren’t watching Trophy Wife and Enlisted (and shame on ABC and Fox for treating them so shoddily). As for The Bridge, I understand why John Landgraf canceled it, even as I mourn the fact that the show had finally found itself in Season 2. Meanwhile, upstart outlets desperate for eyeballs — I’m looking at you, Amazon, Hulu and Yahoo Screen — have no excuse for passing on these discarded gems as they search for avid viewers.

Scene of the Year: Viola Davis takes off her wig in How to Get Away With Murder

At times early in the ABC freshman drama’s run, it seemed as if producers had forgotten that it had cast the Oscar-nominated powerhouse as Annalise Keating. But they sure remembered in episode four, which closed as Davis removed her makeup, and then her wig, and faced her husband, stripped physically and emotionally bare. It was a stunning revelation, and one that I hope is only the first of many How to Get Away With Murder moments in which Davis leaves us breathless.

Most Welcome Revival: Twin Peaks

It’s happening, again! I’ve been disheartened by Hollywood’s efforts to turn every movie into a TV show next year, but one reboot announcement warmed my heart: Twin Peaks, which Showtime will resurrect in 2016 as a limited series. With David Lynch and Mark Frost returning to the fold for the entire run, and bringing back many of the original characters (Coop!), I’m already jonesing for some damn good coffee and a heavenly slice of cherry pie.

Sweetest Surprise: Jane the Virgin

When I first heard the premise for Jane the Virgin, I thought I’d stumbled upon an Onion article. A virgin is artificially inseminated — by accident? Ugh, pass. Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Instead, the show has been a little slice of perfection each week. It still feels like it could all fall apart at any moment, but what a delightful ride it’s been.

The Anti-Moonlighting: The Mindy Project

Most shows succumb to the Moonlighting curse and start spiraling when they finally pair up their big couple (cough, New Girl, cough, Suburgatory). But The Mindy Project, which had captivated me even as it churned through plot and supporting characters, finally found its footing this season as it turned Mindy Lahari (Mindy Kaling) and Danny Castellano (Chris Messina) into a committed couple. Their wacky, wonderful relationship has brought out the best in each other, and the show.

Please, as if this Adult Swim masterpiece had any real competition. I apologize for putting this into your head again, but…it takes a lot to make a stew!

Kids Show of the Year: Phineas and Ferb Star Wars 

I’ve been forced to watch a lot of nauseatingly awful kids shows over the past several years, which is why I keep steering my children back toward Phineas and Ferb, which is equally as entertaining for parents as small fry. But the always-inventive show outdid itself with last summer’s crossover, Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars, which paid homage to the original Star Wars with an ingeniously-crafted parallel story. Bring on Phineas and Ferb: Empire Strikes Back! Okay, greenlight it first, then bring it on!

Network of the Year: FX

This boils down to one question: if I were stranded on a deserted island, and could only bring along one network’s lineup of 2014 programs, which one would it be? Of course I would go for the network that airs four of my top 10 shows of the year (The Americans, Fargo, You’re the Worst and Louie), along with The Bridge (RIP), Archer, Justified (which had its first off-year – but like pizza, even bad Justified is pretty terrific), American Horror Story and The Strain. Hell, I even stuck with Sons of Anarchy to the bitter, bloody end as well. FX, you’re peerless.

Best Comic Book Series: The Flash

It grabbed me from its fully-formed pilot and hasn’t let go: The Flash is the perfect comic TV show. It’s joyous and bubbly instead of broody (enough moping around, everyone else! Lighten the hell up!), with vividly-drawn supporting characters and villains who pop. I hope the oodles of superhero shows in development for next season are all watching The Flash — and taking copious notes. Go go, Grant Gustin!

Here’s How the New Simpsons App Will Change Your Life

Best. App. Ever. That’s the early consensus from most of us at TCA summer press tour as FX unveiled Simpsons World, which will allow fans to stream all 552 episodes of The Simpsons, and much, much more.

While John Landgraf had previewed Simpsons World for me earlier this year, this was everyone’s first look at it — and it did not disappoint. At Quartz, I listed five reasons why Simpsons World will change your life — and one reason it might not. Among the five: instant access to every Simpsons episode and clip ever.

Until now, there has never been a way to (legally) stream previous Simpsons seasons. FXX is kicking off its Simpsons run by airing each episode (and The Simpsons Movie) chronologically in a 12-day, round-the-clock marathon. Yet every episode will be available instantly at all times on “Simpsons World,” regardless of which episodes are currently airing on FXX. “Having a space where all of the episodes can be available simultaneously is key,” said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. (The Simpsons Movie will be available “intermittently,” said FX’s COO and president of program strategy Chuck Saftler.)

Viewers can browse episodes chronologically through each season, and Saftler said he is also working on acquiring the original Simpsons shorts that aired during Fox’s The Tracey Ullman Show back in the late ’80s. There will also be a randomizer function that allows you to “spin the bottle and get any episode you want,” said Stephanie Gibbons, president of marketing and on-air promotions, who demoed “Simpsons World” for reporters.

I cannot stress enough how impressive Simpsons World is. This thing looks like a slum dunk.

Soon You Can (Legally) Stream ‘The Simpsons’—but There’s a Catch

Woo hoo! At TCA winter press tour, FX Networks announced that it will create a Simpsons app within its FXNOW streaming app that will finally allow fans to stream all 530 episodes of The Simpsons. FX Networks CEO John Landgraf shared more details with me for this Quartz article:

The Simpsons content will be curated in a separate app, which Landgraf said will be “integrated with and linked through” the FXNOW app. The Simpsons app will contain a multitude of Simpsons clips as well as full episodes (all 530 episodes will be available at all times, not cycled through at various intervals), all of which will “be infinitely cross-referenced and sortable and searchable in various different ways,” Landgraf said.

Landgraf also detailed the app’s big catch, which involves authenticated subscribers, and also talks about FXX’s continued search for its own identity apart from sibling FX.
